Engaging the onboard chromatic tuner mutes the output signal as well (so no more tuning noises bleeding through the PA!) Patch saving

The A3’s real muscle lies in its software-driven functions, including digital modeling of various acoustic guitar types and microphones, plus a wide array of effects and EQs. The preamp is very quiet. The Zoom specs quote a –100 dBm noise floor and a 120dB signal-to-noise ratio. The Models Add the shimmering silkiness of phasing, flanging, chorus, tremolo, vibrato, detuning, and pitch shifting with these 9 effects. The A3’s front panel features three parameter knobs that also function as buttons. These buttons can be used to open various menus where you can then use the parameter knobs to tweak effect settings to your liking. Adjust the mix position of mic signal, turn the AUTOSAVE function ON and OFF, recall patches and more with ease and efficiency. This is a box that does a LOT and does the majority of it very well. There are, however, some caveats to think about when considering this pedal.

Reverb may be the most important effect for many acoustic players. The A3 offers 12 different varieties, of which the hall and room types are most useful for enhancing acoustic sounds. None were so pristine that I’d choose them over a high-quality dedicated reverb unit, but I’ve played plenty of gigs where I’d have preferred the Zoom’s ’verbs than those of the venue’s mystery PA. The unit is built like a tank and should have no problem handling the rigors of a live show. Ins and outsThe A3’s hardware features are impressive enough, but its real power lies in the software, accessed via the LED screen and controlled by three combination push-button/knobs. The LED screen presents a virtual pedal board with three slots. Slot one is always occupied by the modeler, which we’ll explore in a minute. The other two slots can be loaded with any two of a large collection of effects, which include reverbs, delays, chorus, phaser, flanger, compressors, auto-wah, exciters, and graphic and parametric EQs. Pushing the buttons steps through the available effects, while turning them takes you inside the controls of the selected effect. Patches can be saved to memory so you can recall different selections as you need them. The A3 provides remodeling presets for 16 different body types/shapes and 28 world-renowned acoustic guitars, allowing you not only to restore the true sound of your guitar but to simulate the tonal characteristics of other instruments as well. In addition, there are 40 onboard DSP effects, each carefully crafted to enrich the tone of acoustic guitar. For ease of use, these are organized into the followingcategories:

Use the Tap Tempo feature to set the tempo in real-time to the rhythm of a song as you play guitar. You can also use it to for delay times and modulation effect frequencies. I came across this video which explains the features I thought a bit better than the manual and it may help folks that are new to the A3.....The actual guitars that were used in the development of the acoustic remodeling function are shown in the photograph above. At one time I was going to get an A3 as an upgrade to my A2, but went in a different direction and got a Zoom MS70CDR which I put behind Fishman Pro-EQ or LR Baggs PADI pre. I'll say I'm not fond of Zoom's documentation on their gear.
