About this deal

Teach – there is a particular sequence of how to teach each word and I think the two main things that struck me about this are that it ensures lots of repetition and that it is multi-sensory, thus enabling most children to learn it. It details a comprehensive and structured approach to learning with a multitude of activities and lesson plans.

This book outlines how to best support these children who require extra help, offering concrete, easy-to-implement activities and resources for use in small groups, to maximise the impact on learning and open up access to the curriculum. From 1996–2017, Stephen worked as a Speech and Language Therapy Service Manager in Hackney and the City of London.or ‘I’ve used ‘menacing’, one of our Goldilocks words, in my writing about Warwick Castle – I can only use it in this paragraph about the dungeons though, it wouldn’t be appropriate in the other sections. In other words, we will be teaching the sound and initial letters of the word; what word class it is (for example, a noun, adjective, adverb, verb) including how the word is structured in a sentence; and what the word means. This free resource includes a series of visual summaries that provide an overview of the Word Aware Approach for Early Years Practitioners. It adopts a whole school approach but is equally effective for specific classes and groups or individual learners. You can’t teach a word one day and then forget about it – it needs to be a much more systematic approach.

Word Aware is mostly a whole school approach, with small groups also held for children who need either pre-teaching of vocabulary, or who need to acquire word learning skills before they can benefit fully from the rest of the approach. She is the co-author of bestselling Speechmark resources Language for Thinking (second edition, 2017), Word Aware 1 (second edition, 2022) Word Aware 2 (2017) and Language for Behaviour and Emotions (2020). They were able to explain the word to other people in school which helped secure their own understanding.I think the Word Wall would be a great way to keep the new vocabulary in the minds of both staff and pupils so that it is used often and in as many contexts as possible.
