Historically, Asian manufacturers (Nissan & Mitsubishi) have favoured the CHAdeMO and Type 1 chargers. However, an increasing number of these Asian manufacturers are now switching to European AC standards for their next generation models. [ 3] Nearly all manufacturers now use it on their new models including Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Polestar, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Jaguar, Mini, Peugeot, Vauxhall / Opel, Citroen, Nissan, and VW. CCS has become the default standard for rapid charging.
Using an EV connector does not just boil down to the amount of current we want, or communicating the correct amount of data between the EV and charger. Instead, manufacturers must also consider that the physical charger needs to be plugged in and the connector cable itself has to be ‘lugged’ to the vehicle. Currently, only two electric cars with this connector are produced, and one of them, Nissan, is moving to CCS connectors, so it seems that this standard will be common only in Japan and China.
