Some medical conditions may interact with Aciclovir cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you: Medications and Mothers' Milk, Sixteenth Edition (2014) Hale, T and Rowe, H, Hale Publishing, Plano, Texas. Aciclovir does cross the placenta (Schaefer, 2007 and Briggs, 2011) however, following topical use of aciclovir there is minimal absorption through the skin (Schaefer, 2007) and systemic exposure will be low. There is also significant experience of systemic aciclovir use in pregnancy and no evidence of an increased risk of congenital defects, adverse foetal or neonatal outcomes were found during a manufacturer - CDC organised pregnancy registry between 1984 and 1999 (Briggs, 2011). Three standard animal studies revealed no teratogenic effects although abnormal thymus and immune system resulted in rats when doses causing maternal toxicity were used (Briggs, 2011). The following dermal drug concentration gradient emerged for both topical and oral aciclovir: stratum corneum> epidermis>dermis. There was no difference in concentration between cream and ointment.

Genital herpes simplex virus is very contagious when blisters are present. You should not have sex from the time your symptoms first start until they are fully over, as there is a high chance of passing on the virus. Use the cream for up to 5 days. If the infection has not healed after this time, you can continue to use it for a further 5 days.

Side Effects

Aciclovir is predominantly eliminated via the kidneys, primarily by glomerular filtration and to a lesser extent by tubular secretion. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to Aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any other ingredients ofthe preparation (see section 6 for a complete list of ingredients). It is strongly recommended that the UK National Poisons Information Service be consulted on cases of suspected or actual overdose where there is doubt over the degree of risk or about appropriate management.
